Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2024 Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association (DMNA) Annual Meeting! We had a fantastic turnout, with community members, elected officials, local leaders, and business representatives gathering to celebrate our accomplishments and set the stage for an even brighter future.
Key Highlights
The evening kicked off with a warm welcome from DMNA Board President, Dianne Walsh, who introduced the current board members and shared updates on our ongoing projects and goals. We reviewed some exciting initiatives, including enhanced neighborhood safety programs, business support efforts, and community-building events that have made our downtown a vibrant, welcoming place for all.
Walsh also recognized and thanked outgoing board members Jim Bishop, Abby Larson, and Isaac Risseeuw. Walsh introduced DMNA Executive Director Christie Hantge. She noted that Hantge has been instrumental in guiding the association’s efforts to enhance community engagement and improve the livability of the downtown community. Her dedication to building strong neighborhood partnerships and advocating for resident needs has greatly contributed to DMNA’s success this past year.
Hantge then presented a Board Legacy Award to outgoing board member Carletta Sweet. Sweet has been a steadfast and invaluable presence on our board of directors for more than 25 years. Her passion for this community and her tireless efforts have helped shape our neighborhood into a vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming place for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. Her dedication is a testament to her love for this community and her belief in the power of citizen engagement to create lasting change.
Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from elected officials: Senator Bobby Joe Champion, Ward 7 Council Member Katie Cashman, Ward 3 Council Member Michael Rainville, and MPRB 4th District Commissioner Elizabeth Shaffer. Our keynote speaker was the City’s Community Safety Commissioner Todd Barnette. The Commissioner discussed his approach to Minneapolis’s public safety strategy, emphasizing a holistic approach that coordinates efforts across multiple departments, including Fire, 911, Police, Neighborhood Safety, and Emergency Management. He underscored the importance of neighborhood safety initiatives like the Mill District Safety Walks and Somali Youth Link.
One of the meeting’s highlights was the recognition of Peter Zenner as the 2024 DMNA Volunteer of the Year. Peter’s tireless work in community initiatives has made a lasting impact, and we were delighted to honor his contributions. His commitment exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism that keeps our community thriving.
Elections to the DMNA Board of Directors also took place. Congratulations to our new board members Zachary Brunnert, Julia Laden, Matt Monroe, and Craig Simonson. We look forward to working with all of you!
Looking Ahead
Walsh highlighted our 2025 Strategic Direction, focused on enhancing public safety, supporting small businesses, promoting sustainability, and fostering inclusive community spaces.
As we move into 2025, DMNA remains committed to collaborating with residents, business owners, and city officials to address the unique challenges and opportunities in our neighborhood. Together, we will continue advocating for resources, supporting local businesses, and organizing events that bring people together.
